What are SMART goals?

This technique was first introduced in 1981 and is commonly attributed to Peter Drucker in an issue of Management Review. Since then, the acronym has gained momentum as individuals utilise its practices for their personal development.

S - Specific
Create clearly defined and unambiguous goals
When starting out on any new path, it can often feel overwhelming if you have too many goals in mind that you want to achieve. This first phase of your journey involves setting your goals. To help ease you into the process, you should try to keep these as simple, concise and as attainable as possible.
Setting unrealistic goals may cause you to miss deadlines and discourage you as the weeks go by. To combat this, try keeping things simple while being as detailed as possible. For example, instead of saying “I want to learn a new language”, try something like “I will practice new vocabulary at least twice a week”. These specifics will help you stay on track as your progress through your goals.
M - Measurable
Quantifiable and trackable goals
Tracking progress is an important factor in goal setting. Being able to reflect on how far you’ve come can be an excellent way to keep you going on days where things may be a little harder. Ensure your progress and growth are easily trackable to keep your spirits up and your self-esteem even higher!
For example, rather than “I want to make more profit in the next two months,” try out “I want to see my profits rise by 5% in the next quarter.” These figures give you something solid to track, rather than a vague idea of where you are. You’ve got this!
A - Achievable
Realistic and attainable goals
Small wins are still wins and no goal is too small. Utilise SMART goal setting for whatever you wish, but make sure your goals are attainable for you. Keep in mind obstacles that may halt your progress or deadlines that will have to be adhered to. Factor in timings while being realistic when deciding your goals.
R - Relevant
Aligns with the overall objective
Your goals should align with your broader plans and values. When setting goals, keep in mind your long-term objectives and ensure they line up to create a future you can strive for. Ask yourself why this goal is important to you, and why you want to achieve it. Questions like these will help you define the relevancy of the goal.
T - Time Based
Have a specific timeline for the achievement
A goal without a deadline is often just a daydream. Setting clear dates for when you’d like to achieve something will help keep you on track and feeling good about your progress. This creates a sense of urgency and could help keep the fire under you lit, keeping you focused.
Say you’d like to improve your confidence when public speaking – try “I want to be able to confidently present my PowerPoint at the meeting on November 5th”.
